The rescue operation has entered its third day following the building collapse in the Lyari area of Karachi, with the death toll rising to 27.
The building named Gada Palace, located in Baghdadi, Lyari, has been reduced to rubble for many hours, yet the operation remains incomplete. Heavy machinery is being used to clear the debris, but due to fears of finding more bodies underneath, the rescue is being carried out cautiously.
According to a Rescue 1122 officer, 95% of the debris has been removed so far. A total of 27 bodies have been recovered, including 3 children, 9 women, and 15 men. Three more people are believed to be trapped under the rubble. During the operation, large sums of money were also found twice, which have been handed over to the concerned authorities.
Among the deceased, 20 individuals belonged to the Hindu Maheshwari community. After holding last rites at the Musa Lane Edhi mortuary, they were buried at Maheshwari Graveyard in Baldia Mawach Goth.
Surrounding buildings also suffered damage from the collapse. Nearby residential buildings were evacuated, and the area was cordoned off by police. Around 50 rickshaws parked beneath the building were also crushed.
In another incident, an 8-storey residential building in Lyari’s Agra Taj developed cracks. The administration declared it dangerous, evacuated and sealed it, and cut off electricity and water supply.
Residents protested and demanded alternative housing. The Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Karachi South said that affected families were offered temporary shelter in a school.
A case has been registered at Kalri Police Station against the builder and contractor. The SBCA Assistant Director is the complainant in the case. The collapsed building had been constructed just two years ago.
