44.7% of Pakistan’s population lives below poverty line, World Bank says

Islamabad: According to the World Bank, 44.7 percent of the population in Pakistan has fallen below the poverty line, up from 39.8 percent previously.

 A report issued by the World Bank states that for the world’s lower-middle-income countries, a person earning $4.20 per day per capita is considered below the poverty line. Earlier, a person earning $3.65 per day was considered below the poverty line, which has now been increased.

As a result, the poverty level in Pakistan has increased to 44.7 percent. According to a World Bank report, the poorest population in the country is 16.5 percent, with a daily income of $3 per capita, while the upper middle income is $8.5 per day and comprises 88.4 percent of Pakistan’s total population.

These World Bank poverty statistics have been compiled according to the 2017 population, while a new census was conducted in Pakistan in 2023.

According to the 2017 census, the total population of Pakistan was 206 million people, and the number of people living in poverty increased by 85 million to 91 million.
