India launches master plan to stop Indus River water

India has announced plans for 10 new mega hydropower projects in Ladakh, as part of its master plan to stem the flow of the Indus River.

ISLAMABAD: India, which under its master plan to stem the flow of the great Indus River in the disputed region of Ladakh under a UN resolution, has announced plans for 10 new mega hydropower projects in Ladakh including Achinthang-Sanjak, Parfela, Sont (Batalak), and Khalsti.

These projects not only violate the storage capacity allowed under the agreement but also raise serious concerns about blocking and reducing water flows in Pakistan.

It seems that the aim of these projects is to provide heating and energy facilities for the soldiers deployed in the icy region of the Siachen Glacier, while the deprived and marginalized people of Ladakh are left cold.

This has come to light in a letter by Pakistan’s renowned water expert Irshad H. Abbasi titled ‘A humanitarian crisis brewing: The Indus Waters Treaty and India’s actions’, sent to the United Nations Secretary-General, Mr. Antonio Guterres.
